Interior design research

For my interior design project I will be creating my dream home studio workspace for creative design.

I have chosen this idea because as an Art and Design professional, I need to have a good space at home to work from.

My initial ideas are that the space should be calm, comfortable, inspiring. It should also be functional - for example, there is various equipment that will need to be  included in the space. This will impact the design of the space in a big way, therefore I will list the equipment and features that I want to include in my home studio:

iMac Pro computer
Graphics tablet
Scanner
Light box / drawing board
Paper - A4 and A3
Pens, pencils, brushes
Paints, inks,
Home printing press
Large cork board for planning and organisation
Comfortable desk chair
Small sofa for tea-breaks, thinking and client meetings
Coffee table - as above
Bookshelf for inspiration and reference
Lamp - for drawing
Large windows to give lots of light
Plants - because it is calming and good for mental health
Art - Inspiring art on the walls

This is what I imagine will be in my dream home studio space. Before I start my research, I will write my initial ideas for the style and design:

Minimalism - I like things to be tidy and organised, everything should have it's place and the room should be easy to clean.

Natural materials - I like to have as much natural wood as possible. I would also like to research how I can use other natural materials such as stone.

Light - I would like lots of natural light becuase it is good for drawing / painting, and also makes the room feel better.

Practial / Industrial - I like everything to have a purpose, but it can still be a beautful object.

My first ideas are about using classic vintage, well made wooden and metal objects such as lamps, drawing boards and storage units. These serve two purposes - they are practical and decorative at the same time.

I have written about my inital ideas, and now I will collect some research images for inspiration.

Above is a an initial mood board that I have created. I have shown some wooden furniture, including a vintage 'Apotheke' set of drawers. These would have been used for medicine at the doctor's, but I feel that they would be perfect for storing stationary, papers, inks and so on.

I have also included some interesting wooden shelving and storage solutions. I will look into different designs in my further research.

There are some examples of lighting here too - all the lighting and lamps have a classic, vintage industrial feel that I like. The above images are also very bright - lots of natural light and white walls.

I have included an image of a Chesterfield arm chair (https://chesterfields.co.uk/). I feel that the Chesterfield style is quite 'fancy' - it doesn't really fit with the minimal design in the other images, however I am curious as to how contrasting a decorative object against the other minimal obejcts will work.

Going forward with this project I plan to do the following:

Look further at what I need from a functional perspective (e.g. a desk for the computer, storage for paper...)

Research other small design workspaces / home studios

Research designers that use natural materials and minimalist design

Research some classic vintage objects, such as desk lamps and chairs

Reseach colours, materials, textures, patterns...

Initial ideas for the layout of the room - first on paper and later on a digital design program.

Thank you for reading.

John
